Board Concessions Continue, but Union’s Failure to Offer Salary Counterproposal Results in One-Hour
Negotiation Session
Despite hopes that Monday’s negotiation session would be highlighted by a much-awaited salary counterproposal by the Souderton Area Education Association, no such proposal was presented.
During the one-hour session, the Souderton Area School Board did make concessions on its proposal for in-service days and parent conference days. The teacher’s union, on the other hand, is insisting that the School Board agree to a health insurance plan which will cost the district $1.9 million more per year than the School Board’s plan before the union is willing to discuss changes to its salary proposal.
“Despite what the union leadership has been communicating to the public, the union negotiator has not made a single counterproposal to the salary plan the board submitted on September 1,” stressed School Board president Bernie Currie. “Half of the month has passed since then. It is more than disheartening for us and for the families within this school district.”
The next negotiation session is slated for Friday, September 19.
