Souderton Area School District is committed to providing each and every student with a quality visual arts education. Students are challenged to think about the role the arts have played throughout time, and how time and place impact the work of artists and cultures. They learn to think critically and reflect upon their own work as well as the work of others. Student creativity and achievement is recognized through art displays in each school building, at our administrative offices and at Indian Valley Public Library during the annual Youth Art Month Exhibit in March.
The elementary curriculum incorporates the 2014 National Visual Arts Standards which focus on creating, responding, connecting and presenting. Content is built around the elements of art (line, shape, form, color, value, texture, and space) with increased awareness of the context of art. Students are then able to connect art to their experiences, literature, local and global cultures, historical perspectives, emerging technologies and the changing roles of artists in society. Essential questions guide each unit and stimulate high-level creative thinking.
Students are given the opportunity to experience many production techniques while working with a variety of media. These may include: drawing with pencil, crayon, colored pencils, oil pastels, chalk pastels; painting with watercolor, tempera and acrylic paint; adhesives for collage and assemblage; yarn and fibers for textiles; ink for printmaking; clay and wire for sculpture and iPads for digital technology.
Our quality visual arts education prepares students to succeed with many skills needed throughout life. Our certified art teachers guide our students to develop innovative thinking, evaluation of ideas, decision making, collaboration and cooperation with others, careful use of tools, and respectful communication skills. The visual arts are foundational in SASD.
